What Water Heater Repair Should Cost, and Why We Will Not Quote It

What decides a water heater quote is whether the fault is a part or the tank, whether the unit is gas or electric, and how old it is. A tank near the end of its life makes a repair a poor investment even when the part itself is inexpensive.

What actually moves it

Which part failed, and whether it is a burner-side part on a gas heater or an element on an electric one. Whether the heater is in a basement with room to work or a closet it has to be dismantled to reach. Whether the fault is the heater at all, or a boiler making hot water indirectly. And whether anything has to be brought up to current code as part of the work.

Repair or replace: the arithmetic

DOE puts a storage tank at 10 to 15 years, tankless at about 20, and heat pump at 10 to 15. A repair on a heater in the last third of that range buys less time than the same money spent on a replacement, and the date is usually encoded in the serial number on the label.

When the answer is no repair at all

If the tank itself is leaking from its shell, there is nothing to repair. The lining has failed and the steel is corroding through. Anyone offering to fix that is not describing the same problem.
